Further reading

This directory points to sources that complement the historical lessons in this library. It labels each source by scope so that archives, training providers, and conservation guidance are not mistaken for interchangeable authorities. Links were checked on October 18, 2026; online catalogs, course availability, and page contents can change.

  • Monument Lettering Center: history of monument lettering — A North American industry history covering lettering and design standardization and the transition from hand methods to stencil and digital tools. Use it as a secondary historical account; the page includes its own references and further articles.
  • Monument Lettering Center: historical articles — An index of articles about monument companies and people in the lettering trade. Read the linked articles at their source; this library does not reproduce them.
  • Monument Lettering Center: Monument Font Project — The project describes its aim to catalog historically used monument lettering styles and research individual alphabets. This is relevant background for digital type and alphabet history, not a license to reuse its fonts or specimens. The page was identified on MLC’s site but timed out when opened during this review.
  • Stone Quarries and Beyond — A legacy archive index for cemetery and monumental-art references. Its operator says the original site remains online but is no longer updated or corrected; see Stone Quarries and Beyond Continues for current additions. The archive itself prohibits commercial reuse of its material, so follow through to each original publication and verify its source, edition, and rights before relying on or reusing it.

These providers describe current professional courses. They are not historical-source evidence, and course access, eligibility, fees, and availability should be checked with the provider.

  • NAMM training — The National Association of Memorial Masons lists City & Guilds Assured courses including Produce and Embellish Standard Memorials, Hand Tooled (PESM-HT) and Machine Tooled (PESM-MT), alongside burial-ground management, inspection, and fixing courses. NAMM asks candidates to contact it for booking and cost information.
  • Monument Builders of North America: Online Learning Center — An online professional-learning portal for monument builders, retailers, and memorialization professionals. Review its current catalog and access terms directly; course listings may be paid.

These are preservation references for historic places and objects. They do not provide a specification for designing or fabricating a new memorial.

  • CTMNC: Guide Inscriptions et ornamentations gravées (2023 PDF) — The official file name identifies a 2023 guide to inscriptions and engraved ornamentation. The PDF could not be read in the source viewer during this review, so this entry makes no claim about its detailed procedures or coverage. Treat it as a French-language source to inspect directly; free access does not grant permission to reproduce it or make it a universal standard.

Search results for the Association for Gravestone Studies archive route currently return unrelated pages, so this directory does not link to or recommend that route. Revisit the archive only after its current official address and contents can be independently confirmed.

The source register explains the historical works cited inside the wiki and how PDF scan pages map to printed pagination. Historical essays and commercial archives are useful starting points, not independent proof for every claim. Current training providers teach new work; preservation agencies discuss existing historic fabric. Keep those purposes distinct, and check a source’s own terms before quoting or reproducing material.
